Corpus-based Teaching Material
Hi, I am Gülbeyaz Karaca. As in previous years, I will use this blog for teaching purposes again this year. My friend Sude(click on her name to see her blog) and I created content for this corpus-based assignment based on students in the eighth and ninth grades. We wanted the students to understand the differences between the modal verbs should and must as well as the contexts in which they can be used. These materials serve a few purposes. For instance, they will help my students recognize the differences between these modal verbs. In addition, my students will use the corpus site to learn which contexts they should and shouldn't use those modals. In this material, the focus was not on vocabulary, but rather on grammar, specifically on modal verbs. Grammar was also prioritized in the activities in the practice time section. Regarding the design process, I can state that the material is simple to intermediate in difficulty and not very challenging. I can say that the preparation of the exercises in the practice time section is the portion of the design phase that demands a little more work. The primary issue that will emerge from using this material in a real classroom is that it primarily focuses on grammar and might not give vocabulary an adequate amount of emphasis. Although the instructional material incorporates technology, it could have used other skills to get students more engaged in the subject. In conclusion, it was fun to prepare the material, but there are a few issues that could come up if it were implemented in a real classroom. For instance, vocabulary wasn't given sufficient importance. However, I believe the content covers all the necessary ground, teaching students the distinction between the modal verbs should and must as well as their usage contexts and definitions.
